Recently Renovated with a Focus on Fun for the Whole Family
In Greenville, South Carolina, golf course architect
Jeff Lawrence has helped create a new design concept from the aging Crosswinds par three course as part of the facility's transformation into a hospitality experience. The course is
located directly north of Greenville Downtown Airport and originally opened in 1997, when primary architect John LaFoy brought together par three designs from 18 different architects Including Pete Dye, Rees Jones, Arnold Palmer, Bob Cupp, and Tom Fazio.
Lawrence's design for the new owner, Davis Sezna, has a
newly renovated 12-hole course, a
17,000 square foot Humps & Bumps putting course inspired by the original St. Andrews, a
6.5 acre short game practice area and even a
toddler's par 3. The Upstate's newest dance floor is not actually a floor at all- it's a putting green, but at night it becomes a party atmosphere, with revelers walking with brewskis and putters in hand under the energy-saving LED floodlights shimmying around to the music coming from the adjacent clubhouse.
Sezna said the goal for the redo of the facility was to appeal to a broad audience of golfers, both serious and casual, as well as non-golfers who just want an enjoyable outing. The decision to reduce the course to twelve holes was in order to maximize the 29 acres space while also appealing to a changing demographic.
"We have respected the design concepts of the original architects while also making a few refinements to enhance the golf experience," said Lawrence. "It has even included
greens with different grass species - Zoysia, Bent, and TifEagle Bermuda - so that golfers can practice on a variety of surfaces."
Greens have been resurfaced, bunkers rebuilt, and one of the existing holes rerouted to accommodate the new layout. The Himalayas putting green wraps around the clubhouse, and the finishing hole features what Davis describes as "
the deepest and most challenging bunker in South Carolina."
The entire facility reopened in July, 2020 with a new name, 3's Greenville Golf & Grill. Throughout, the emphasis will be on delivering an entertaining experience that promotes fun for all with music and video throughout the course. Come see us and get your game on!

New Putting Surfaces at 3's
Enjoy Three Different Species of Grass Putting Greens to Sharpen Your Skills
The recent improvements to 3's included new putting greens with different grass species -
Zoysia,
Bent, and
TifEagle Bermuda - so that golfers can practice on a variety of surfaces. Each species offers unique characteristics that make them very playable and challenging putting surfaces that will enhance your golf game. We invite you to try them at 3's Greenville and find out what makes them so special. Here are a few highlights...
Zoysiagrass
Zoysiagrass is a thick-bladed, hearty grass that stands straight up, even after a drenching rain. The ball nearly always sits right on top of the grass, begging to be hit. In the South, zoysiagrass maintains its healthy green color longer than bermudagrass, and requires less water which makes it ideal for conservation efforts. Zoysia is a relatively new option for putting greens growing in popularity among USGA courses. Research indicates zoysiagrass offers the potential for increased ball roll on greens, and we think you'll find it an excellent surface that is beautiful, eco-friendly and very playable.
Bentgrass
Bentgrass is one of the most commonly planted grasses on golf course putting greens. Often considered the gold standard for smooth, fast putting surfaces, it is a cool-season grass that forms smooth putting surfaces with little grain and few imperfections. Bentgrass greens are expensive to maintain in warm or hot climates. Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, has the resources to maintain bentgrass greens, but most golf courses in hot climates do not. Here at 3's, we work hard to provide you with the same quality putting greens that you'll find at some of the top resort and PGA courses.
TifEagle Bermuda
TifEagle Bermuda is the third generation of bermudagrass varieties developed exclusively for golf greens at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station in Tifton, Georgia. Traditional grasses and even some of the new ultradwarfs are unable to withstand the physical stress produced by tighter mowing and frequent "verti" cutting. TifEagle is extremely resilient and also recovers quickly from mechanical mishaps, has good color and is very tough in all weather conditions. TifEagle's leaf blades are extremely fine and erect, maintaining a dense playing surface that delivers excellent trueness for putting.
